Yogi Cabinet Approves Renaming Jalalabad In Shahjahanpur District As Parshurampuri
The Uttar Pradesh cabinet chaired by Yogi Adityanath officially approved renaming Jalalabad in Shahjahanpur district to Parshurampuri.
Lucknow: In a major administrative and cultural decision, the Uttar Pradesh cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday officially approved the proposal to rename the historical Jalalabad town and tehsil in Shahjahanpur district as 'Parshurampuri'.
The decision came during a high-level cabinet meeting where the state government greenlit 29 major proposals, including the new Uttar Pradesh Startup Policy 2026. The renaming initiative aligns with long-standing demands from local residents, socio-religious organizations, and public representatives who wanted the region's ancient identity restored.
According to historical and mythological texts, the town of Jalalabad is widely revered as the birthplace of Lord Parshuram, an avatar of Lord Vishnu. The town also houses a thousands-of-years-old ancient temple dedicated to him, attracting lakhs of devotees every year.
Recognizing its cultural significance, the state government had officially declared the town as 'Parshuram Janmabhoomi' back in 2022. The process of changing the name originally began in March 2018 when the Shahjahanpur Municipal Council passed a resolution, followed by another formal push in September 2023. Union Minister and local MP Jitin Prasada had also strongly advocated for the change.
Following the state's recommendation, the Union Home Ministry issued a 'No Objection Certificate' (NOC) and finalized the Devnaveri and Roman script spellings via the Ministry of Science and Technology. With the final stamp of approval from the state cabinet on Monday, all government departments, revenue registers, and administrative records will now switch to the new name.
Local historians note that the name Jalalabad was originally assigned to the township during the Mughal era in honor of Emperor Jalaluddin Akbar. The official transition to Parshurampuri has sparked widespread celebrations across the Shahjahanpur district.
