Amit Shah’s farewell dinner for ex-IB chief Tapan Deka sparks political speculation

New Delhi : In a development that has sent ripples through political and bureaucratic corridors, Union Home Minister Amit Shah hosted a high-profile farewell dinner for the outgoing Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director, Tapan Kumar Deka. The formal event, held in the national capital following the completion of Deka's highly consequential tenure, has sparked intense speculation regarding his next potential assignment within the government's national security apparatus.

Deka, a highly decorated 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, retired as the head of India's premier internal intelligence agency after receiving multiple extensions for his commendable service. Known widely in intelligence circles as a premier "crisis man" and counter-terrorism specialist, his leadership saw the clinical dismantling of several cross-border terror networks.

Given the warmth and high regard on display during the farewell dinner, top analysts suggest that the seasoned spymaster might soon be transitioned into a crucial advisory or strategic role.

"Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Kumar Deka has completed a stellar tenure marked by a relentless focus on counter-terrorism and internal security," an official remarked following the transition.  The gathering also marked the formal introduction of his successor, Dr. Mahesh Dixit, a 1993-batch IPS officer who has officially taken over the leadership of the bureau.

While the dinner was officially a ceremonial send-off, the presence of the highest echelons of national security brass has fueled rumors that Deka may follow the path of other intelligence veterans, potentially securing a critical post such as a security advisor, an interlocutor for sensitive regions, or a prominent role within the National Security Council Secretariat.
