Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Divorce Case Postponed to August 7

Chennai: The Chengalpattu Family Welfare Court on Monday adjourned the high-profile divorce proceedings of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder, C. Joseph Vijay, and his estranged wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam.

The court deferred the next comprehensive hearing to August 7 after neither party appeared in person before the family court judge.  The couple, who married in August 1999 and share two children, are seeking the dissolution of their twenty-seven-year marriage. Sangeetha initially moved the family court in late 2025, formally filing a petition under sections of the Special Marriage Act.

Her legal plea cites severe emotional distress, financial restrictions, and constructive desertion, alongside allegations concerning the Chief Minister's purported extramarital association with a prominent female actor since 2021. In addition to the divorce decree, the petition seeks permanent financial alimony, reportedly tied to the leader's asset declarations, along with continued residential rights at their shared Neelankarai matrimonial home in Chennai.

During previous listings, legal representatives for both sides requested permission for the high-profile couple to participate via secure video conferencing, citing substantial security liabilities and logistical difficulties stemming from Vijay's public position. However, the court opted for a further postponement of the physical appearances to late summer.

This intense personal development unfolds amidst a massive transformation in Vijay's political career. His newly formed TVK party registered a historic triumph in the recent state assembly elections, dismantling decades of bilateral dominance by the traditional Dravidian parties, which culminated in his swearing-in as Chief Minister on May 10. While speculation regarding potential familial reconciliation mediated by close relatives continues to circulate across local media circles, both legal units must present their subsequent operational responses when the court reconvenes in August.
