Hardik Pandya To Miss Afghanistan ODIs After Fresh Injury Setback
Hardik Pandya is ruled out of the Afghanistan ODI series after suffering a fresh quadriceps strain at BCCI Centre of Excellence
Bengalrur: In a massive setback for Team India, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Afghanistan. The development has raised serious questions over the rehabilitation protocols at the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) newly minted Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, where Pandya had been undergoing rigorous medical assessments.
The 32-year-old all-rounder arrived at the premier facility on June 2 to recover from persistent back spasms that hampered his recent Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign. In an unexpected turn of events, the CoE’s Sports Science and Medicine team initially cleared Pandya for national selection after he successfully completed a week of intensive drills.
However, a late, devastating setback occurred during match simulations when Pandya suffered a fresh, low-grade quadriceps strain. Insiders indicate that the injury likely occurred because the player was pushed to bowl his full quota of ten overs too rapidly during high-intensity fitness assessments. The recurrence of lower-body issues has brought the CoE’s workload management strategies under intense scrutiny from senior cricket analysts.
For an athlete with a highly fragile workload history, a gradual return to bowling was expected rather than an abrupt maximization of stress. With a minimum three-week recovery window ahead, BCCI medical staff advised Pandya against any immediate weight-bearing activities. Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar emphasized that keeping the match-winner fit for the 2027 ODI World Cup remains India's ultimate objective, signaling a cautious approach toward his future deployment.
Pandya will remain stationed in Bengaluru to undergo close monitoring by top physios, leaving his participation in July's high-profile bilateral tour of England cloaked in immense doubt. Meanwhile, selectors are scrambled to find an ideal tactical replacement to restore balance to the squad
