Extreme Monsoon Rains Crown Tribal Kinnaur As Himachal's Wettest District

Shimla: In a dramatic shift in monsoon patterns, the high-altitude tribal district of Kinnaur has emerged as the wettest region in Himachal Pradesh, logging an astonishing 121 percent surplus rainfall in the first half of July 2026. According to the State Meteorological Centre in Shimla, the normally rain-shadow district received 61.9 mm of rainfall against its long-term average of 28 mm.

The unprecedented deluge in a terrain known for dry conditions has triggered significant administrative concern. Regional meteorological data indicates a highly uneven monsoon distribution across the state. While seven districts, including Kullu (88 percent surplus) and Solan (69 percent surplus), have received excess precipitation, five other districts continue to experience a rainfall deficit. The unusual surge of moisture-laden winds climbing deep into the trans-Himalayan ranges has transformed Kinnaur's fragile, steep-slope landscape into a highly volatile zone.

The sheer volume of rain has already caused localized disasters, including flash floods in tributary streams that disrupted lifeline routes like National Highway 5 and flooded low-lying settlements. Local authorities have cautioned tourists against traveling to high-altitude areas like Chitkul and the Sangla Valley due to sudden mudslides and shooting stones. While meteorologists expect a brief stabilization in temperatures, the India Meteorological Department has warned that monsoon activity is projected to intensify further, maintaining a high state of alert across the state’s most vulnerable district.
