King George's Medical University Prohibits Cooking Non Vegetarian Meals Inside Hostels

Lucknow: In a major administrative move that has sparked widespread debate, King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has officially banned the cooking and serving of non-vegetarian food across all its hostel messes. The decision follows a recent visit by Uttar Pradesh Governor and Chancellor Anandiben Patel, who raised serious concerns regarding hygiene standards and overall food quality during the university's convocation ceremony.

The KGMU administration issued a strict directive to all 18 major and three smaller hostel messes, managed both by the university and student-run cooperatives. During an official campus inspection, the Governor’s team discovered that non-vegetarian meals were being prepared in unhygienic conditions in three hostels. Furthermore, inspectors discovered expired spices and low-quality ingredients being used in multiple student kitchens, prompts immediate institutional reform.

Key Highlights of the Directive:Cooking Prohibition: The preparation of any non-vegetarian meals or items is strictly prohibited within the hostel mess premises and cooperative kitchens.  Ordering Restructured: The university clarified that the restriction applies only to internal cooking; students remain free to order non-vegetarian food from outside vendors.

Quality Upgrades: KGMU has formed a six-member task force to enforce dietary hygiene, ensure high-quality protein alternatives like paneer, and install mandatory washing facilities.  The sudden restriction has triggered a mixed response on campus. While some faculty members and medical student bodies questioned the dietary restriction at a premier medical institution—arguing that personal nutritional choices should be respected—the administration maintains that the rule is entirely focused on maintaining absolute cleanliness and preventing health hazards.
