Kangra Districts Leads Himachal Pradesh In TB Prevention With 91 Percent Coverage

Kangra : In a significant breakthrough for public health, Kangra district has emerged as the frontrunner in Himachal Pradesh’s fight against Tuberculosis. The district has successfully achieved an outstanding 91% coverage in Tuberculosis Preventive Treatment (TPT), positioning it at the very top of the state’s healthcare performance ladder for 2026.

The targeted TPT initiative focuses primarily on individuals who share households with active TB patients, as they face the highest risk of contracting the infection. Providing timely preventive therapy to this vulnerable group effectively breaks the chain of transmission before the disease can manifest.

Intensive Screening and Counseling Drive Success
According to health officials, Kangra's stellar performance is the result of a meticulously planned micro-action framework. Frontline healthcare workers implemented a robust tracking strategy utilizing the central 'Ni-kshay' portal. The operational team prioritized rapid chest X-rays, extensive contact tracing, and thorough clinical evaluations to filter and treat high-risk individuals.

"Out of 1,708 identified household contacts of active pulmonary TB patients across the district, an impressive 1,530 eligible individuals were successfully put on preventive therapy." - District Health Reports

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Vivek Karol and District TB Officer Dr. R.K. Sood attributed this milestone to the relentless efforts of community health officers, ASHAs, and field supervisors. They emphasized that while treating active cases remains vital, preventing new infections through proactive therapy is the definitive way forward. With this milestone secured, the district health administration has now set its sights on crossing the 95% coverage mark by the end of the fiscal year.
