Hemophilia Society Organizes Seminar in Kanpur: Insights into Managing the Genetic Disorder

Kanpur :The Hemophilia Society, Kanpur, organized a comprehensive seminar on Sunday to raise awareness and discuss the latest management strategies for Hemophilia. The event was inaugurated with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony by Praveen Seth, Secretary Rajesh Bhasin, and Treasurer Dr. Sunil Taneja.

Understanding the Genetic Challenge
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sunil Taneja explained that Hemophilia remains a chronic genetic disorder without a permanent cure, though global research is ongoing. He defined the condition as a bleeding disorder where the blood's ability to clot is severely impaired.

In a healthy individual, specific elements in the blood form a "web" to stop bleeding after an injury. In Hemophilia patients, this process is dangerously slow due to a deficiency in clotting proteins.

Symptoms and Types

  • The seminar highlighted key red flags that help in the early detection of the disorder:
  • Prolonged Bleeding: Excessive bleeding even from minor cuts.
  • Spontaneous Internal Bleeding: Frequent nosebleeds without cause and painful swelling in joints (knees, elbows).
  • Bruising: Large, unexplained bluish marks on the skin.
  • The two primary types discussed were:
  • Hemophilia A: The most common form, caused by a deficiency in Factor VIII.
  • Hemophilia B: Caused by a deficiency in Factor IX.

Effective Management Strategies
While a complete cure is yet to be discovered, doctors emphasized that patients can lead healthy lives through Factor Replacement Therapy. This treatment involves injecting the specific clotting factor that the patient’s body lacks, effectively preventing life-threatening internal bleeding.

The seminar saw participation from several distinguished medical professionals and society members, including Dr. Awadh Dubey, Dr. Sanjay Rastogi, Dr. B.N. Tripathi, Dr. A.K. Arya, and Dr. S.K. Gautam. The event concluded with a collective call for better access to therapy and continued support for patients across the region.
