Municipal Corporation Orders Eviction Of Over One Hundred Fifty Unsafe Shimla Houses

Shimla: In a major move to prevent potential loss of life, the Shimla Municipal Corporation (MC) has declared over 150 residential and commercial buildings across the hill station structurally unsafe. Pointing to severe structural damage and high vulnerability, the civic body has ordered the immediate eviction of these properties.

The announcement follows a comprehensive geological and engineering survey of various wards in the capital town of Himachal Pradesh. The decision comes in the wake of relentless monsoon rains that have triggered widespread landslides, soil erosion, and slope instability throughout the region. Many of the flagged structures have developed massive, deep cracks in their foundations and supporting walls, making them highly prone to collapse.

The municipal administration has warned that any delay in vacating these structures could lead to a catastrophic disaster, especially given the precarious vertical terrain of the city.Areas like Sanjauli, Summer Hill, and Krishna Nagar have been identified as highly vulnerable zones.

To ensure safety, local administrative teams have been dispatched to serve individual vacation notices to property owners. For families forced out of their homes, the district administration is setting up temporary relief camps and shelter homes. While the eviction orders have caused widespread panic and anxiety among residents—many of whom have lived in these homes for decades—officials maintain that public safety is the absolute priority. Geologists have repeatedly warned that Shimla’s carrying capacity has been severely stretched, urging strict regulation of construction activities on fragile, steep slopes.
