Dev Samaj Demands Permanent Ban On Kinner Kailash Yatra Citing Ecological Damage
Kinnaur’s Dev Samaj demands a permanent ban on the Kinner Kailash Yatra, citing sacred desecration and ecological damage.
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) : Following the official postponement of the annual Kinnaur Kailash Yatra 2026 over severe safety hazards, the local Dev Samaj has escalated its demands, seeking a permanent ban on the high-altitude pilgrimage.
Citing severe environmental degradation and cultural desecration, representative bodies of local deities have taken to the streets to protest against the continuation of the yatra.
According to a memorandum submitted by the Tukpa Khunand Dev Samaj to the Deputy Commissioner of Kinnaur, the fragile Himalayan ecology is facing unprecedented stress. Local leaders point out that despite the district administration's official suspension of the yatra, an unregulated and illegal influx of tourists continues to sneak onto the sacred tracks.
Over 1,500 daily pilgrims have reportedly been gathering along the path, leaving behind waste and threatening the region's ancient glaciers and rare alpine herbs. Beyond environmental concerns, the indigenous community has raised serious spiritual objections.
Local beliefs dictate that the 79-foot vertical rock monolith of the Kinner Kailash Shivling is highly sacred and must not be physically scaled. Protesters allege that trekkers are walking with footwear near the holy site, violating the core cultural and religious sanctity of the deity.
With local deities reportedly communicating warnings through their oracles (Kaardars) to protect the mountains, the Dev Samaj has warned of massive protests across the tribal district if the administration fails to enforce a total and permanent halt to the pilgrimage.
