Delhi Government Withdraws Two-Day Weekly Work From Home Policy For Employees

New Delhi: The Delhi government has officially revoked its two-day weekly work-from-home (WFH) arrangement for state employees. The decision was confirmed by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) following an official assessment that the geopolitical situation in the Middle East—which had prompted severe domestic fuel conservation measures—has practically normalised.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta approved the withdrawal of the policy, which previously permitted government personnel to work remotely on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The initial remote-working mandate was introduced in May as part of the "Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdaan" public campaign.

It followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's national appeal to curb domestic fuel consumption, reduce imported energy dependency, and protect economic resilience against supply chain threats triggered by the West Asia conflict.  While the hybrid workspace model has been rescinded, the Delhi government decided to retain its revised, staggered office hours to mitigate peak-hour urban traffic congestion across the capital. Under the updated directives, offices operating under the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) will now function from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM. Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will maintain its existing timeline, continuing to run from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

The roll-back signals an end to the temporary austerity measures that included a 20% cut in official vehicle fuel entitlements, virtual-only administrative meetings, and a one-year freeze on official foreign visits for ministers. With global oil markets and geopolitical logistics stabilizing, the administration is shifting focus back to standard operations. A formal directive executing the transition is being dispatched across all non-essential government departments to ensure complete operational resumption at physical desks by next week.
