MUMBAI-The Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) has launched a high-level probe following reports of candidates being elected unopposed in the upcoming January 15 civic polls. Authorities are scrutinizing whether pressure, threats, or illegal allurements led to the mass withdrawal of rival nominations.

With elections to 29 municipal corporations, including the BMC, scheduled this month, the SEC has demanded detailed reports from local bodies. The move aims to ensure a fair democratic process after Opposition parties alleged that ruling alliances used coercive tactics to secure early wins.
