India Meteorological Department Issues Severe Orange Alert Across Four Crucial Himachal Districts

Shimla: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an urgent orange weather alert for four prominent districts in Himachal Pradesh, predicting isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next twenty-four hours. The atmospheric warning covers Shimla, Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur districts, where intense monsoon torrents are expected to lash the region.  According to meteorologists at the Shimla regional weather station, the active monsoon current is intensifying across the western Himalayan belt. Concurrently, a yellow weather alert has been activated for five additional districts—including Kullu, Solan, Una, Bilaspur, and Hamirpur—indicating widespread moderate to heavy precipitation.  The regional administration has cautioned that the relentless downpour could trigger severe localized waterlogging in low-lying suburban sectors, cause drastic drops in highway visibility, and result in slick, hazardous driving surfaces. Essential municipal services, electricity networks, and localized transport infrastructure face high risks of temporary disruption.  Crucially, the intense rain spells have already caused infrastructural damage in upper regions. Overnight flash floods in the tribal district of Kinnaur led to massive swells in local rivulets, dumping tons of heavy boulders, thick slush, and woody debris onto major thoroughfares. A significant section of National Highway-5 near Cholling was completely engulfed by the mudslide, stranding hundreds of commuters and heavy cargo trucks.  State disaster response authorities have issued explicit public advisories instructing both permanent residents and traveling tourists to defer non-essential mountain travel. People are strictly warned to maintain safe distances from unstable hillsides, fast-flowing seasonal streams, and swollen river basins. Rescue teams have been placed on high alert as wet soil conditions elevate the threat of spontaneous landslides across vulnerable mountain corridors.
