Himachal Monsoon Toll Rises To 11; 49 Key Roads Remain Blocked

Kullu : The southwest monsoon has intensified across Himachal Pradesh, with the state-wide death toll rising to 11 following a series of rain-related incidents over the last 48 hours. Torrential downpours have triggered widespread landslides and flash floods, severely disrupting normal life and leaving 49 critical road links completely blocked for vehicular traffic.

According to the latest bulletin from the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), the fatalities occurred due to drowning, accidental falls from steep terrain, electrocution, and rain-linked road mishaps. Kangra district has recorded the highest number of casualties with three deaths, followed closely by the state capital, Shimla, which reported two fatalities.

Kullu Worst Hit by Connective OutagesThe transport infrastructure has borne the brunt of the monsoon’s fury. Out of the 49 blocked routes across the state, Kullu district alone accounts for 30 road closures, isolating several remote pockets including 13 stretches in the Nirmand subdivision. Sirmaur district reported eight blocked roads, Chamba registered seven, and Una documented two major closures.

"Emergency response teams, alongside the Public Works Department, are working on a war footing to clear debris, but persistent rainfall is hampering restoration efforts." - SEOC SpokespersonApart from structural road damage, the essential services network has suffered a major blow.

Over 42 power distribution transformers (DTRs) are currently non-functional, causing localized blackouts primarily in Sirmaur and Chamba. Furthermore, 27 drinking water supply schemes have been heavily disrupted in Chamba district due to heavy siltation in natural water sources.

With the local Meteorological Centre extending an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across the mid and low hills, the state administration has advised tourists and residents to avoid unnecessary travel, especially near landslide-prone highways and overflowing rivers.
