xEight Traditional Himachal Pradesh Products Secure Iconic Geographical Indication Status Across Global Markets

Shimla:  In a major milestone for cultural preservation and economic growth, eight traditional products from Himachal Pradesh have officially been granted the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) status.

This landmark development, announced by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, elevates the state’s total tally of protected indigenous products from 9 to 17.  Secured through the intensive coordination of the Himachal Pradesh Council for Science, Technology & Environment (HIMCOSTE), the newly certified list celebrates the state's deep agricultural variety and unparalleled craftsmanship.

The eight newly registered products are:  Spiti's Seabuckthorn (Chharma): An antioxidant-rich wild berry.  Salooni Safed Makka: A unique, sweet white maize variety from Chamba.  Chamba Metal Art: Antique hand-cast brass and copper work.

Sirmauri Loiya: A durable, highly insulating handwoven woolen wrap.  Kinnauri Topi: The iconic cultural cap featuring a velvet green band.  Sepuvadi of Mandi: A beloved, spinched-lentil delicacy unique to Mandyali Dham feasts.  Kinnauri Apple: High-altitude, naturally crisp fruits with extensive shelf lives.  Kinnauri Jewellery: Intricate silver ornaments inspired by local Buddhist and Hindu motifs.

Chief Minister Sukhu highlighted that this legal framework directly prevents unauthorized imitation, shielding local artisans and farmers from generic commercial exploitation. "This recognition safeguards our authentic heritage while opening lucrative channels for rural entrepreneurship, higher market value, and sustainable livelihoods," he stated.

Sushil Kumar Singla, Secretary of Environment, Science, and Technology, added that the international recognition establishes robust legal backing, significantly magnifying the export potential of the Himalayan state's interior districts. Furthermore, the state is already processing applications for four upcoming items, including Chamba Chukh and Sirmaur Ginger, ensuring Himachal's historic heritage continues to thrive commercially.
