Rain Spoils Sport as Series Opener Between India and England Abandoned in Durham

Durham: The opening encounter of the five-match T20I series between India and England at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street was called off on July 1 due to persistent rain. The washout left fans disappointed, especially after a high-scoring first innings put India in a commanding position.

After winning the toss, Indian skipper Shreyas Iyer opted to bat first, aiming to bounce back from the team's recent setback against Ireland. The decision paid off as India posted a formidable total of 189/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

The innings was anchored by brilliant half-centuries from opener Abhishek Sharma and captain Iyer himself:

  • Shreyas Iyer: 68 runs
  • Abhishek Sharma: 59 runs

For England, Saqib Mahmood was the pick of the bowlers, turning the tide in the death overs to finish with figures of 3/38. Sam Curran and Adil Rashid chipped in with one wicket apiece, restricting India just as they looked set to cross the 200-run mark.

The momentum shifted completely as the innings break commenced. Heavy downpours lashed the ground, forcing the ground staff to cover the entire playing area.

The rain refused to relent for over an hour, causing significant puddles on the outfield. With no signs of clearing up and the cutoff time fast approaching, the match officials officially called off the game at approximately 12:47 AM IST.

The two teams will now move to the second T20I, hoping for clearer skies and a complete game of cricket.
