Robotic Surgery Removes Massive Pancreatic Tumor from 20-Year-Old at Max Hospital

Lucknow :  In a significant breakthrough for oncology, doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Lucknow, have successfully removed a rare and massive tumor from the pancreas of a 20-year-old woman. Using the cutting-edge da Vinci Xi Robotic System, the surgical team extracted a tumor measuring 10.6 cm—roughly the size of a grapefruit—which is exceptionally rare for this type of condition.

The patient, Anshika Singh, a college student, had been suffering from abdominal pain and swelling for six months. Diagnostic tests revealed a Solid Pseudopapillary Tumor in her pancreas. While these tumors are usually detected at a size of 1-2 cm, Anshika’s case was highly complex due to the tumor’s massive size and its proximity to vital organs.

Led by Dr. Ajay Yadav (Director, GI & Robotic GI Onco Surgery), the 6-hour operation was performed with extreme precision. Dr. Yadav noted, "The robotic system provides enhanced control and clarity, allowing us to operate in tight spaces without damaging surrounding organs."

Despite the patient being anemic, the surgery was performed with zero blood transfusion. The minimally invasive nature of the robotic procedure led to a record recovery, with the patient being discharged within just 36 hours.

Final histopathology reports confirmed that the surgical margins were clear of cancer cells, meaning Anshika will not require further chemotherapy or radiotherapy. This successful outcome highlights how the combination of robotic technology and surgical expertise can provide a new lease on life for young cancer patients.
