IMD Heightens Weather Alerts As Heavy Monsoon Rains Threaten Multiple Himachal Districts
The India Meteorological Department issued a strict orange alert across Himachal Pradesh, warning of heavy downpours, landslides, and flash floods.
Shimla : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has significantly escalated its weather warnings for Himachal Pradesh, placing several vulnerable districts under a strict orange alert. The regional meteorological center in Shimla has warned of isolated heavy to very heavy precipitation as the southwest monsoon intensifies dynamically across the Himalayan hill state
. According to the latest meteorological bulletin, the highest intensity rainfall is expected to slam the Kangra, Una, and Sirmaur districts. Simultaneously, isolated heavy showers are projected to drench the adjoining regions of Chamba, Mandi, and Shimla. Weather scientists warned that the sudden, intense moisture influx could trigger localized waterlogging in low-lying catchment zones, reduce driving visibility, and make treacherous mountain roads exceptionally slippery, multiplying the risk of vehicular skidding.
The ongoing active monsoon spell has already manifested its destructive potential across the high-altitude tribal belts. Recent cloudburst-like events triggered sudden flash floods in Kinnaur, resulting in significant debris accumulation that temporarily blocked the strategic National Highway-5 (NH-5). While multiple parked vehicles sustained structural damage from the racing sludge, local authorities confirmed zero human casualties from the sector.
In response to the escalating threats, the state disaster management authority and district administrations have issued comprehensive public safety advisories. Tourists and local residents are strictly urged to suspend non-essential travel, completely avoid landslide-prone cliff corridors, and maintain a safe distance from volatile rivers, seasonal streams, and active mountain nullahs.
Emergency rescue teams and state public works crews have been placed on high alert with heavy Earth-moving machinery positioned at critical junctions to address road blockades on a war footing as the wet spell persists.
