Nine Himachal Pradesh Districts On High Alert As Continuous Rains Trigger Flash Flood Warnings

Shimla : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and its Hydromet Division have issued a flash flood advisory for nine districts across Himachal Pradesh, as relentless monsoon downpours continue to batter the hill state.

The warning covers Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti districts. Saturated catchment areas, overflowing rivulets, and intense precipitation bursts have heightened the risk of sudden surface runoff and water surges in local watersheds.

Continuous rainfall has severely disrupted normal life and transport infrastructure across multiple valleys. In Lahaul and Spiti, a temporary bridge over the Jahalma Nallah was washed away during a violent overflow, severing road connectivity between Keylong, Udaipur, and the Pangi valley. Meanwhile, cloudbursts and heavy mudslides in Kangra district’s Boh Valley damaged local structures, forcing several families to relocate to safer locations.

In response to the escalating weather emergency, district administrations in Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Chamba ordered the closure of all schools, colleges, and educational institutes. Dozens of roads statewide remain blocked due to landslides and caved-in tarmac, while local power transformers and drinking water supply networks have suffered widespread operational disruptions.

The meteorological department has urged residents and tourists to avoid non-essential travel, stay far clear of swelling riverbanks and landslide-prone slopes, and follow official safety guidelines. State disaster management authorities have activated round-the-clock emergency control centers (helplines 1070 and 1077) to coordinate rapid response operations. Local administrative teams and road maintenance crews remain deployed along critical corridors to clear debris as weather conditions permit.
