Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026: 17.69% Turnout Recorded Amid Technical Glitches in Tirupur
Tamil Nadu 2026 Assembly Elections see 17.69% turnout amid EVM glitches in Tirupur. DMK, AIADMK, and TVK battle for power
Chennai : The democratic pulse of Tamil Nadu is beating strong today, April 23, 2026, as voters across all 234 constituencies head to the polls to decide the state's political trajectory for the next five years. While the morning saw a steady stream of citizens, the process was briefly hampered by technical setbacks in the industrial hub of Tirupur.
Polling Momentum and EVM Hurdles
As of the latest reports, Tamil Nadu has recorded a 17.69% voter turnout in the early hours. However, the momentum faced a minor speed bump in Tirupur, where polling was temporarily delayed due to malfunctions in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
To counter such disruptions, Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo confirmed that a 20% reserve of EVMs and a 30% reserve of VVPAT machines are on standby. Technicians were deployed immediately to ensure that voters in the affected booths could resume casting their ballots without further delay.
A Three-Pronged Battle
- The 2026 elections represent a high-stakes showdown between traditional titans and a high-profile newcomer:
- DMK Alliance: Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is campaigning on the "Dravidian Model," seeking a second consecutive term to solidify his developmental agenda.
- AIADMK Alliance: General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami is looking to reclaim the fort, focusing his campaign on administrative efficiency and criticising the current government's performance.
- The TVK Factor: Adding a layer of unpredictability is the debut of Vijay, founder of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). With the actor-turned-politician contesting from Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East, all eyes are on how much of the youth vote he can peel away from the Dravidian majors.
Security and Enforcement
With 4,023 candidates in the fray and over 5.73 crore eligible voters, the Election Commission has left nothing to chance. Beyond the 75,064 polling stations, the state has witnessed a massive crackdown on electoral inducements. Authorities have already seized an unprecedented ₹1,262 crore in cash and materials, marking one of the most strictly monitored elections in the state's history.
Voting is scheduled to conclude at 6:00 PM, after which machines will be moved to 62 secure counting centers. The final verdict of the people will be revealed when counting commences on May 4.
