Thieves Loot Registrar's Office Near SSP HQ in Mathura
Shocking theft in Mathura’s Registrar's Office near SSP HQ exposes glaring security lapses in a supposedly high-security zone.

Mathura. In a shocking breach of security, unidentified miscreants burgled the Registrar’s Office situated within Mathura’s Sadar Tehsil late Monday night. The daring theft occurred alarmingly close—just 70 meters away—from the office of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), raising eyebrows over the state of law and order in the city.
The incident came to light on Tuesday morning when staff arrived at the office around 9:00 AM to begin the day’s work. Upon unlocking the premises, they were greeted with scenes of disarray—broken window grills and ransacked drawers—which immediately indicated foul play.
Located near the Mathura Collectorate and within what is considered a high-security zone, the Registrar's Office is also in close proximity to the Civil Line police outpost. The fact that a theft could occur in such a well-guarded administrative belt has sparked concerns and public outrage.
According to preliminary police investigations, the thieves are believed to have entered the premises by scaling a boundary wall and then breaking through a window. The entry point was traced to an area near the desk of local deed writer Bhartendu Gautam, which opens into the office of the Sub-Registrar First.
Once inside, the culprits appear to have executed their plan swiftly and silently. They rummaged through the office, the exact items or documents stolen are still under assessment by the authorities. Early indications suggest that some important registry files and possibly electronic devices were taken.
Upon receiving information about the theft, officers from the Civil Line police outpost and Sadar Bazar police station reached the site and began a thorough forensic and physical investigation. CCTV footage from surrounding offices and buildings is being examined to trace the route and identity of the burglars.
A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, admitted that the incident is “embarrassing,” especially considering the location. “It’s unacceptable that such a crime took place under our noses. We’re looking into possible lapses in night patrolling and are committed to nabbing the accused at the earliest,” the officer stated.
The crime has drawn criticism from citizens and opposition leaders alike, who have questioned the efficiency of local policing and security deployment in key government offices. Many have demanded an overhaul of the security infrastructure in and around administrative buildings.
Meanwhile, Sadar Tehsil officials have begun internal assessments to verify the extent of the damage and loss. An official statement from the District Magistrate’s office is expected soon.
This incident not only highlights a growing trend of audacious crimes in urban centers but also underscores the urgent need for stricter surveillance and coordinated night patrols, especially around sensitive government zones.
As investigations progress, the people of Mathura await answers—and action.
