Kanpur Ophthalmic Society Hosts Masterclass to Combat Glaucoma, a Leading Cause of Blindness
Kanpur Ophthalmic Society successfully hosted a masterclass for over 50 specialists, focusing on advanced diagnosis and management of glaucoma.

The masterclass was lauded for its blend of academic rigor and practical experience, designed to equip doctors with the latest tools and techniques to combat this silent sight thief. The program was inaugurated with a ceremonial lamp-lighting by a distinguished panel, including Dr. Malay Chaturvedi, President of the Uttar Pradesh Ophthalmic Society; Dr. Shalini Mohan, Chief Convener of the program and Officer in Charge of Glaucoma at GSVM Medical College; Dr. Manish Mahindra, President of the Kanpur Ophthalmic Society; Dr. Mohit Khatri, Secretary of the Kanpur Ophthalmic Society; and Dr. Ruchika Agarwal, Head of the Ophthalmology Department at Rama Medical College.
Throughout the day, the participants engaged in a series of sessions led by prominent specialists. Dr. Manish Mahindra, President of the Kanpur Ophthalmic Society, conducted a session on "Disc Assessment Mastery," where he delved into the subtleties of identifying discs that may mimic glaucoma. Dr. Shweta Tripathi of Indira Gandhi Eye Hospital, Lucknow, demonstrated advanced Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) techniques crucial for monitoring glaucoma progression. Meanwhile, Dr. Reena Sharma from Upma Safai, Etawah, highlighted common errors in visual field testing, offering practical advice to improve diagnostic accuracy. The program also featured an interactive, case-based discussion led by Dr. Shalini Mohan, which taught clinicians how to solve real-world problems in their practices.
Reflecting on the program's success, Dr. Manish Mahindra, who is also the founder of Mahindra Eye Institute, stated, "This program underscores our society's commitment to ensuring every doctor has the correct information and tools to provide better treatment for glaucoma. Our ultimate goal is to save sight." Echoing his sentiments, Prof. Dr. Shalini Mohan added, "When we empower our physicians with precise tools and knowledge, we bring about a positive change in the lives of patients not just in Kanpur but across the entire state of Uttar Pradesh."
The sessions were expertly moderated by a team of dedicated doctors, including Dr. Neha Saxena, Dr. Ekta Arora, Dr. Saurabh Mistry, Dr. Namrata Patel, Dr. Akash Sharma, Dr. Sukant Pandey, Dr. Eena Budhiraja, Dr. Akanksha, and Dr. Lokesh Arora. This initiative is expected to significantly raise the standard of glaucoma care in the region and offer new hope to countless patients at risk of losing their vision to this condition.
