Vodafone Idea Stock Rallies Near 52-Week High Following Court Relief

New Delhi : Shares of Vodafone Idea Limited witnessed an aggressive buying flurry, trading close to their 52-week high after securing a monumental legal victory. The Bombay High Court quashed the Central government’s decade-long demand notices seeking a retrospective One-Time Spectrum Charge (OTSC).

This landmark decision has removed a massive cloud of financial uncertainty hovering over India's telecom sector.  In early market transactions, Vodafone Idea's stock jumped nearly 4%, peaking at ₹14.90 apiece on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Investors reacted aggressively to the news that a division bench of Justices Manish Pitale and Shreeram Shirsat had ruled in favor of the telecom major.

The court officially struck down the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) original demand notices, which totaled an astronomical ₹2,113 crore for Vodafone Idea alone.  The long-standing dispute originated from a 2012 Union Cabinet decision to levy retroactive charges on telecom companies holding airwaves beyond 6.2 MHz between 2008 and 2012.

The operators collectively moved the court in 2013, challenging the retrospective financial burden. In its final judgment, the High Court observed that the government lacked any statutory authority under the Indian Telegraph Act to unilaterally modify contract licenses or impose additional financial liabilities mid-way.

Crucially for Vodafone Idea's balance sheet, the bench directed the government to immediately return all associated bank guarantees. This release of financial security is a significant liquidity booster for the cash-strapped telco, directly freeing up non-fund-based banking limits. While the company still faces massive, unresolved long-term liabilities concerning Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) and active spectrum dues, this specific ruling provides critical operational breathing room. Analysts indicate that the freed collateral will heavily assist the firm in funding its ongoing network upgrade and accelerating its highly anticipated pan-India 5G rollout.
