New Delhi:  Stand-up comedian Madhur Virli issued an official public apology on Monday after an old performance video clip containing insensitive remarks about rape survivors resurfaced on social media, triggering immense public outrage.

The severe backlash arrives at a time when internet users are already locked in an intense online debate concerning structural misogyny in modern comedy, fueled by the recent "₹370 biryani" controversy on fellow comic Pranit More’s show.The viral video, excerpted from Virli’s 2024 stand-up special titled Love & Latex, features him trivializing sexual assault and making highly disturbing jokes regarding a perpetrator’s mindset and murder following rape.

As the clip circulated widely over the weekend, netizens severely condemned the IIT Delhi graduate, demanding immediate accountability and legal intervention for exploiting extreme trauma under the guise of edgy, dark humor.  Breaking his silence via an official statement on his YouTube channel, Virli expressed profound regret to those offended by the material.

The comedian clarified that the bit was performed nearly two years ago and claimed that he had realized the inherent flaws of the routine shortly afterward, pulling the video down long before its recent re-emergence. While asserting that comedy possesses the creative freedom to explore difficult subjects, Virli conceded that certain topics demand absolute sensitivity, context, and informed discretion.
