New Delhi : In a significant diplomatic success, the Indian government has rescued eight more of its citizens from the clutches of an international job scam operating out of Myawaddy, Myanmar. The rescued individuals were repatriated to India via Bangkok on July 8, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Indian embassies in Myanmar and Thailand.

The Indian Embassy in Myanmar confirmed the rescue operation through a post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating:
"After being released from scam centers in Myawaddy, 8 Indian nationals were sent back to India via Bangkok today. Since July 2024, a total of 840 Indians have been rescued. We urge Indian citizens to avoid accepting overseas job offers without verifying with the missions. Unauthorized border crossings can result in future entry bans."

This latest development takes the total number of rescued Indian citizens from this region to 840 in just one year, underlining the scale of the fake job racket luring vulnerable individuals with promises of lucrative overseas employment.

Simultaneously, the Indian Embassy in Thailand issued another advisory via X, reinforcing its commitment to the protection of Indian nationals. “As part of ongoing efforts by the Government of India to rescue Indian nationals trapped in fraudulent employment schemes, the Embassy in Bangkok assisted 8 Indian citizens in returning home via Mae Sot, Thailand, on July 8, 2025. These individuals were freed from cyber fraud centers operating near the Myanmar–Thailand border,” the post stated.

The Embassy further advised Indian citizens to verify job offers thoroughly, cross-check credentials of foreign employers, and research recruitment agencies before accepting any overseas employment. They cautioned that falling for unauthorized or illegal job offers not only jeopardizes one’s safety but may also hinder future international travel.

In recent months, Myawaddy—a lawless border town in Myanmar—has emerged as a hotspot for cybercrime hubs and fake job syndicates, many run by international crime networks. These rackets reportedly lure individuals with high-paying IT or data entry jobs, only to trap them into forced labor under inhumane conditions.

Despite multiple advisories, cases continue to rise, reflecting both the desperation for overseas work and the sophistication of the scams. Indian missions in both Myanmar and Thailand remain on high alert, working closely with local authorities to identify, rescue, and repatriate citizens.

The Ministry of External Affairs has once again emphasized the importance of vigilance and urged Indians to consult embassies before accepting jobs abroad. Citizens are advised to avoid traveling illegally or through unknown agents, as this not only increases the risk of exploitation but may also result in long-term travel bans.

As rescue operations continue, the Indian government reiterates its commitment to the safety and well-being of its nationals abroad, while urging caution and awareness in dealing with international employment offers.
