Dr. Jaishankar's High-Level Meeting with Global South Countries

New York : External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar hosted a high-level meeting of like-minded Global South countries in New York. During the meeting, he called for greater solidarity among Global South countries, a renewed commitment to multilateralism, and collective efforts to reform the United Nations and other global institutions.

Dr. Jaishankar stated that given growing global concerns and various risks, it is natural for the Global South to turn to multilateralism for solutions. Sharing information about the meeting in a post on the social media platform X on September 24, the External Affairs Minister stated that several proposals have been put forward for the Global South to address global issues.

Elaborating on these proposals, he urged countries in the Global South to utilize existing platforms to strengthen discussions among them to enhance solidarity and promote cooperation. Share your unique strengths, experiences, and achievements that can be beneficial to other countries in the Global South. Vaccines, digital capabilities, education, agricultural practices, and SME culture are good examples of this. In areas like climate action and climate justice, take steps that benefit the Global South, rather than justifying the interests of the Global North. Discuss the potential of emerging technologies, especially AI. Undertake comprehensive reforms to the United Nations and the multilateral system.

It should be noted that India has consistently championed the voices of the Global South, i.e., poor and developing countries, on numerous international platforms and reiterated its commitment to ensuring that developing countries play a meaningful role in shaping the global agenda. In addition to hosting this high-level meeting, Jaishankar also held several bilateral meetings with the top leadership of Global South countries. During these meetings, they reviewed the progress of bilateral cooperation and discussed ways to further deepen relations with India in the future.
