Milestone Achievement: Medanta Lucknow Successfully Completes Four Hundredth Kidney Transplant
Medanta Lucknow celebrates a healthcare milestone by successfully completing its 400th kidney transplant, giving a patient a new lease on life.
Lucknow: Medanta Hospital Lucknow has achieved a major healthcare milestone by successfully performing its 400th kidney transplant, providing a critical new lease on life to a patient suffering from end-stage renal disease. The milestone highlights the rapid growth of the hospital’s advanced transplant program, which has successfully executed 419 transplants since its launch during the challenging phases of the COVID-19 pandemic on June 25, 2020.
The program has established a reputation for managing highly complex medical cases. Out of the total surgeries, Medanta Lucknow has successfully completed 57 blood-group incompatible (ABO-incompatible) kidney transplants. The facility regularly deploys cutting-edge robotic-assisted transplantation methodologies, catering to a diverse age demographic ranging from a vulnerable 9-year-old pediatric patient to a 65-year-old senior citizen. Notably, the program has also seen older individuals safely step forward as living donors, with the oldest recorded donor being 76 years old.
Data released by the hospital underscores deeply moving trends in living organ donations, driven overwhelmingly by family structures. Wives represent the largest cohort of donors at 139, followed closely by 130 mothers and grandmothers, and 42 sisters and sisters-in-law. Fathers, brothers, daughters, and husbands have also contributed heavily to saving their loved ones.
Reflecting on the milestone, Dr. Rakesh Kapoor, Medical Director and Director of Urology & Kidney Transplant Surgery, stated that the 400th surgery represents the deep trust patients place in their clinical care. Dr. Raj Kumar Sharma, Director of Nephrology, added that timely transplantation offers patients freedom from grueling, long-term dialysis cycles.
Supported by a multidisciplinary team including Dr. Anish Srivastava and Dr. Dharmendra Singh Bhadauria, Medanta Lucknow continues to scale up its clinical infrastructure, aiming to make advanced, high-risk organ transplantation accessible to patients across northern India.
