Himachal Pradesh Government Actively Promotes Chess To Foster Strategic Skills Among Young Students
Education Minister Rohit Thakur announces state initiatives promoting chess in Himachal schools to enhance strategic thinking and cognitive skills.
Shimla : The Himachal Pradesh government is introducing targeted initiatives to integrate chess into school sports and extracurricular frameworks to foster critical thinking, concentration, and problem-solving abilities among young students.
Education Minister Rohit Thakur highlighted the initiative while interacting with sports representatives and academic administrators in Shimla. He emphasized that mental sports like chess play a vital role in building analytical stamina, decision-making capabilities, and cognitive agility among school children from an early age.
Under the state’s updated youth engagement strategy, the Department of Education is encouraging schools to establish dedicated chess clubs, organize inter-school tournaments, and facilitate expert coaching modules. The government plans to integrate structured chess competitions within annual sports calendars across primary and secondary educational institutions statewide.
Thakur noted that while conventional physical sports remain integral to school curriculums, mind sports offer an inclusive platform for students from diverse backgrounds—including rural and remote hilly areas—to excel on national and international stages. He added that the state sports board will collaborate with recognized chess associations to supply equipment and organize regular training camps for promising prodigies.
Highlighting the state’s broader commitment to youth development, the Education Minister reiterated that boosting infrastructure for both physical and intellectual games will safeguard students against modern distractions, including screen addiction and substance abuse. School administrators and local chess enthusiasts have welcomed the initiative, noting that structured support will help identify hidden grassroots talent across the hill state.
