Nitish Unveils 125 Units Free Power Plan in Poll Push

Patna . In a strategic move set to energize his voter base ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a significant power subsidy—offering 125 units of electricity free to every household across the state. The decision is expected to benefit over 1.67 crore families, effective from August 1.

In a statement shared via social media, Kumar revealed that the relief will be visible in electricity bills from July itself, as charges for the first 125 units will be waived. This bold announcement is being viewed as a counter to the 200 units of free electricity promised by his key political rival Tejashwi Yadav, who leads the RJD within the opposition INDIA bloc.

“Bihar’s people will get relief on their power bills starting next month. No charges will be levied on the first 125 units. This is part of our commitment to deliver affordable electricity,” said the JD(U) chief, highlighting that the state already ensures low-cost electricity for its citizens.

The move reflects Nitish Kumar’s continued focus on infrastructure and welfare. Having served as Bihar’s Chief Minister for over 17 years in multiple terms, Kumar has consistently advocated for power reforms, including his long-standing call for “one nation, one tariff.” He argues that states like Bihar are being unfairly charged higher grid rates, an imbalance he wants the Centre to correct.

Apart from the subsidy, Kumar has reiterated his government’s commitment to sustainable energy, declaring that Bihar aims to generate 10,000 MW of solar power over the next three years. He emphasized that a cleaner, greener energy ecosystem is essential for the state’s long-term development and self-reliance.

To accelerate this transition, Kumar mentioned the expansion of the 'Kutir Jyoti Yojana', a state-funded scheme promoting solar panel installation in public spaces and on the rooftops of economically weaker households. This initiative not only supports renewable energy but also aligns with the government’s rural upliftment agenda.

Political observers see this electricity relief package as a direct electoral strategy aimed at countering the growing appeal of Tejashwi Yadav’s populist promises. While the JD(U) focuses on governance continuity and infrastructural delivery, the opposition is pitching aggressive welfare pledges.

Whether this electrifying promise will resonate with voters remains to be seen, but it has certainly energized the political climate. As Bihar inches closer to polling day, such welfare-centered narratives are expected to dominate the campaign trail. (PTI)
