Himachal’s PWD Multi-Task Workers Threaten Protests Over ₹6,000 Salary

Shimla : The patience of 4,832 Multi-Task Workers (MTWs) employed under the Public Works Department (PWD) in Himachal Pradesh has finally run out. Despite holding postgraduate degrees like MA and MSc, these youth are forced to toil for 8 to 10 hours daily for a meager monthly stipend of just ₹6,000. Feeling betrayed by years of unfulfilled promises regarding regularisation and pay hikes, the workers are now gearing up for a state-wide agitation.

With skyrocketing inflation, sustaining a family on ₹200 a day has become impossible. Highlighting this systemic exploitation, an MTW Workers Union delegation met PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh to submit a comprehensive memorandum of their demands, warning of massive protests if immediate action is not taken.

Union State President Sher Singh emphasized that these workers have been providing dedicated services for years without any financial security. "Rising costs of food, education, and healthcare have made survival miserable. The government must introduce a fair and permanent policy," he said.

Key Demands Raised by the Union:

  • Daily Wager Status: Grant daily-wage status to all MTWs who have completed four years of service.
  • Service Policy: Draft a formal service policy aligning with their 8 to 10-hour work shifts.
  • Social Security: Secure the future of workers over 48 years of age and consider Old Pension Scheme (OPS) benefits.
  • Fixed Salary Dates: Establish a uniform, timely monthly salary disbursement date across the state.
  • Maternity Leave: Provide mandatory maternity leave and other essential welfare benefits for female MTWs.

Additionally, the union demanded immediate financial compensation and justice for the family of Devendra, an MTW from Mandi district who recently met with a tragic accident. The union warned that if the government fails to deliver a time-bound solution, thousands of workers will take to the streets.
