India-Canada Hold Historic Migration Dialogue in New Delhi to Strengthen Safety and Mobility for Diaspora
India and Canada officially signed Terms of Reference during the inaugural Migration and Mobility Dialogue in New Delhi, focusing on protecting diaspora interests and streamlining pathways for students and skilled workers.
New Delhi : Marking a significant step forward in bilateral cooperation, India and Canada successfully hosted the inaugural meeting of the 'India-Canada Migration and Mobility Dialogue' in New Delhi. The high-level meeting was co-chaired by Shripriya Ranganathan, Secretary (CPV & OIA) in the Ministry of External Affairs, India, and Ted Gallivan, Deputy Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. To establish a structured framework for future engagements, both sides officially signed the Terms of Reference during the session.
The core focus of the landmark dialogue centered on fostering safe, orderly, and legal movement between the two nations. Detailed discussions were conducted to simplify migration management, improve mobility pathways, and make procedures far more transparent. The outcome of this agreement is poised to deliver immense benefits to Indian students, skilled professionals, and labor workers heading to Canada. Streamlining these processes is expected to significantly reduce complexities related to visa applications, work permits, and residency protocols, ultimately providing stronger safeguards for the vast Indian diaspora residing in Canada.
In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that people-to-people ties remain the strongest bridge connecting India and Canada. The ministry highlighted a natural synergy between India's vibrant, highly skilled youth workforce and Canada's evolving demographic and labor market requirements—making well-regulated mobility an essential need of the hour. To ensure sustained momentum, this dialogue will be held annually, supported closely by a dedicated Joint Working Group on Migration and Mobility.
Sharing highlights of the meeting, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on 'X' that both delegations explored actionable steps to simplify movement and migration workflows. He noted that these structural enhancements will serve as a crucial catalyst for driving the long-term growth and stability of India-Canada bilateral relations.
