New Delhi : India's strategic outreach in the Indo-Pacific region reached a vibrant milestone as Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, successfully wrapped up a high-level seven-day official visit to three Pacific Island nations: Samoa, the Cook Islands, and the Republic of Nauru. Running from October 16 to October 22, this diplomatic mission strongly reaffirmed New Delhi's unwavering commitment to deepening developmental partnerships with distant island economies under the guiding vision of India's Act East Policy.
Throughout the tour, the Minister engaged in substantive bilateral discussions with top political leadership across the capitals. Commencing in Samoa, the dialogues focused heavily on expanding cooperation in crucial sectors such as trade, sustainable tourism, climate change adaptation, and capacity building. A core theme of these interactions was leveraging the framework of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) to elevate strategic synergy and regional security.
Beyond high-level diplomatic talks, Minister Margherita conducted vital on-site inspections of various socio-economic development projects funded by the Indian government. He also interacted extensively with local stakeholders, including alumni of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) and Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship programs.
Sharing his thoughts on social media, Margherita highlighted his interaction with Nauruan ITEC and ICCR alumni, noting how their transformative experiences in India underscore the tangible impact of New Delhi's skill-enhancement initiatives. In a separate address to the local Indian diaspora in Nauru, he commended their invaluable role in fostering deep-rooted people-to-ties and reinforcing bilateral goodwill.
This landmark tour highlights India's ongoing dedication to standing in solidarity with developing nations in the Pacific, championing the collective voice and developmental aspirations of the Global South on the global stage.
