Green Partnership: India Powers Bhutan’s EV Ambitions with E-Mobility Project

Thimphu : Strengthening the "Neighbourhood First" policy, the Government of India is spearheading a transformative e-mobility project in Bhutan. This initiative aims to modernize public transport and uphold Bhutan’s prestigious carbon-negative status through the deployment of electric buses and robust charging infrastructure.

The Indian Embassy in Thimphu recently highlighted that the "Accelerating E-mobility Adoption" project will bolster Bhutan’s EV strategy. This comprehensive partnership includes the deployment of 45 e-buses, the establishment of 30 charging stations for urban and inter-district travel, and the integration of e-vehicles for official government use.

Bhutan’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has officially signed a nine-month contract worth 350,415,000 Ngultrum with Switch Mobility Automotive Limited. This agreement covers the procurement of the 45 electric buses and necessary support services.

Under the Project Tied Assistance (PTA) framework, these buses are expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026. This shift is designed to provide Bhutanese citizens with cleaner, more efficient transit options while significantly reducing urban carbon footprints.

This project underscores a shared commitment to sustainable infrastructure, ensuring that Bhutan remains a global leader in environmental conservation while modernizing its national transport network.
