Apollo Lucknow Performs Thyroid Cancer Surgery Using Heart-Lung Machine
Apollo Lucknow doctors used a heart-lung machine to secure airway during rare thyroid cancer surgery.
LUCKNOW-Apollo Hospital Lucknow has successfully completed a rare thyroid cancer surgery on a 70-year-old man whose windpipe was almost completely blocked. Doctors used a heart-lung machine to maintain circulation and oxygen supply, making the complex and life-saving operation possible.
A cancerous thyroid lump pressed on the airway, so intubation and bronchoscopy failed. Surgeons postponed the operation, consulted the family, and placed the patient on peripheral cardiopulmonary bypass through femoral vessels under spinal anaesthesia, with cardiac, anaesthesia and oncology specialists working together.
During bypass support, the surgical oncology team performed a subglottic tracheostomy below the tumour to secure the airway. The heart-lung machine was then removed and the thyroidectomy completed in about five hours. The patient is recovering well in the ICU.
