Misri was earlier serving as Deputy National Security Advisor. He has held various positions in the Ministry of External Affairs, the Prime Minister's Office, and several Indian missions in Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. Notably, he has also served as the private secretary to three Prime Ministers, Inder Kumar Gujral, Dr. Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi. Before being appointed as Deputy National Security Advisor, Misri also served as India's Ambassador to China from 2019-2021.

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar congratulated Foreign Secretary Misri on assuming the new responsibility on the social media platform 'X'. He said, Congratulations to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on assuming his new responsibility today. Also, I wish him a successful and productive tenure.

Apart from this, Foreign Minister Jaishankar bid farewell to the retired Quatra from the ministry and wished him all the best for the future. He said, thank you to outgoing Foreign Secretary Vinay Quatra for his dedication and many contributions in the field of foreign policy and national security.
