Prayagraj : Responding to the blistering summer heatwave, the Rotary Club of Allahabad Midtown has stepped forward with a practical solution for those most exposed to harsh conditions — street vendors. On Saturday, the club organized a public welfare initiative by distributing 20 water campers to vendors across key areas of the city, including Katra Laxmi Talkies, Rajapur Hanuman Temple, and the AG Office vicinity near the bustling fruit and vegetable market.

This humanitarian gesture was strategically aimed at individuals who earn their livelihood under the open sky — such as pushcart vendors, roadside fruit and vegetable sellers, and hawkers — all of whom face daily exposure to extreme temperatures. With temperatures soaring in Prayagraj and much of northern India, ensuring access to clean drinking water has become a matter of health and survival for many.

“Water is not just a necessity, it’s a lifeline — especially in summers when dehydration and heatstroke cases rise sharply,” said Radha Saxena, a senior member of the club. “This initiative is a way to not only support street vendors but also raise awareness about community-driven solutions to climate-related challenges.”

Each water camper was visibly branded with the Rotary Midtown name, symbolizing not just resource distribution but also promoting the ethos of “Service Above Self.” The branding ensures that the club’s dedication to public service is recognized and inspires other citizens and organizations to follow suit.

Members including Manu Saxena, Vinay Goyal, Vivek Dwivedi, Abhishek Ranjan Agarwal, Amrita Agarwal, Sudhir Poddar, and Neeruj Chugh were present during the distribution, interacting directly with recipients and encouraging them to spread awareness about the safe usage and refilling of the water campers.

This initiative, according to Rotary officials, marks just one of many future plans under their broader community development and welfare outreach. The club emphasized that such efforts are not about recognition but about fulfilling civic duties and making a measurable impact on public health and street-level resilience.

With rising global temperatures and local heat conditions breaking new records, interventions like these — grounded in practicality and empathy — are a crucial lifeline for urban populations operating on the margins.

“We don’t just serve, we connect — with the people, their needs, and the moment,” said Sudhir Poddar, summarizing the spirit of the effort. “This is a beginning. We intend to scale up as needed.”

As the city braces for even hotter weeks ahead, such grassroots hydration support programs are expected to become vital tools in battling urban heat distress, one water camper at a time.
