Astrologer Rinhee Suberwal Honors “Chhattisgarh Ki Lata” in New Book

Mumbai: Astrologer and choreographer Rinhee Suberwal has shared a poignant story of love and remembrance, paying homage to her late grandmother, Manjula Das Gupta, a revered figure in Indian culture known affectionately as “Chhattisgarh ki Lata.” This tribute comes in the form of a book, The Cultural Spine, penned by writer and social worker Anjani Saraf. The book, dedicated to Suberwal’s nani, was released shortly after her passing, making it a particularly emotional and significant gesture for the family.

“My nani was a true stalwart of Indian culture,” Rinhee said. “She dedicated her life to her craft, traveling across the country and performing countless folk songs that resonated with people from all walks of life. This book is a beautiful way to ensure her legacy lives on and continues to inspire.”

Manjula Das Gupta was more than just a musical sensation; she was a compassionate and generous soul. Her powerful voice earned her the title “Chhattisgarh ki Lata” from the state’s Governor and Chief Minister, but her influence extended far beyond the stage. She was deeply committed to social work, regularly donating to the poor, supporting stray animals, helping people find employment, and empowering women to join the workforce.

Rinhee fondly recalled her grandmother's warmth and generosity. “She was an inspiration to so many people,” she said. “Her personality was full of love, and everyone who knew her felt a deep connection. Her passing has left a void that is difficult to fill.”

The book, authored by Anjani Saraf, chronicles Manjula Das Gupta’s life, achievements, and her unwavering values of cultural strength and unity. Saraf, who also runs an NGO, had a personal connection to the family and a deep admiration for Manjula’s work, making her the perfect person to tell this story.

Rinhee also credits her nani for paving the family’s way into the film industry and for establishing connections with prominent figures. “Because of my nani, we built strong relationships. Great leaders like Indira Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Rajiv Gandhi were all familiar with her talent. She was often invited to perform the iconic patriotic song ‘Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon,’ and her rendition never failed to move the audience.”

Through this heartfelt tribute, Rinhee hopes to introduce her grandmother's story to a wider audience, encouraging them to find inspiration in her journey. “She gave so much to everyone—love, guidance, and encouragement,” Rinhee stated with pride. “I want her to be remembered as a source of inspiration for future generations.”

This book serves as a lasting testament to a woman who not only enriched India’s cultural landscape but also touched countless lives with her compassion and spirit.
