Lucknow : The Radiation Oncology Department of Medanta Hospital organized a press conference for cancer survivors. Several cancer survivors shared their stories, giving new hope and courage to other patients. Experts also explained that cancer is no longer incurable. If detected early, patients can be completely cured in most cases.

Dr. Neeraj Rastogi, Director, Radiation Oncology, Dr. Mohammad Suhaib, Director, Radiation Oncology, Dr. Resham Srivastava, Associate Director, Radiation Oncology, and Dr. Nilesh Agarwal, Associate Consultant, Radiation Oncology were present at the event.

Experts have stated that approximately 40 percent of cancers in men and 15 percent in women are caused by the use of tobacco, cigarettes, and pan masala. By eliminating these habits, approximately 40 percent of cancer cases in India can be prevented. Cancers of the mouth, throat, and lungs, as well as those of the urinary bladder and pancreas, are also caused by tobacco use. Artificial food colorings are also a significant contributor to cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and it can be identified through a three-step self-breast examination. Medanta has released a video on this examination, available online, to raise awareness. Medanta is also organizing camps where trained nurses demonstrate the self-examination process using a torso model.

If cancer is detected in the first or second stage, 80 to 90 percent of patients can recover completely. Approximately 50 percent of patients in the third stage and up to 15 percent in the fourth stage can fully recover.

A balanced diet, adequate sleep, and consumption of fruits and vegetables are essential for cancer prevention. These provide the body with natural vitamins and boost immunity.

Doctors believe that a combination of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy is the most effective treatment. Most patients return to normal life within six months.

Dr. Rakesh Kapoor, Medical Director at Medanta, said, "People get scared at the mention of cancer, but if we recognize its early signs and begin treatment at the right time, it can be completely defeated. Awareness, not fear, is the greatest strength."
