International Thalassemia Day celebrated in KGMU
Shubham Kashyap Lucknow. International Thalassemia Day was celebrated at the Department of Pathology, King George's Medical University on Wednesday. The theme of 2024 is “Empowering Lives, Embracing Progress: Equitable and Accessible Thalassemia Treatment for All”
Various faculties from the Department of Pathology, Clinical Hematology, Queen Mary Hospital, Pediatrics, and Center for Advanced Research participated in the function. Vice Chancellor Professor Sonia Nithyananda launched the facility of free screening of pregnant women coming for thalassemia and sickle cell anemia at Queen Mary Hospital KGMU under a scheme funded by the National Health Mission. However, only those women who are in the first trimester will be able to avail of this facility.
Women who test positive for these disorders will have their spouses screened, followed by appropriate counseling. Dr. Rashmi Kushwaha of the Pathology Department and Dr. Amita Pandey of Queen Mary Hospital will look after the smooth functioning of this facility.
