Various faculties from the Department of Pathology, Clinical Hematology, Queen Mary Hospital, Pediatrics, and Center for Advanced Research participated in the function. Vice Chancellor Professor Sonia Nithyananda launched the facility of free screening of pregnant women coming for thalassemia and sickle cell anemia at Queen Mary Hospital KGMU under a scheme funded by the National Health Mission. However, only those women who are in the first trimester will be able to avail of this facility.

Women who test positive for these disorders will have their spouses screened, followed by appropriate counseling. Dr. Rashmi Kushwaha of the Pathology Department and Dr. Amita Pandey of Queen Mary Hospital will look after the smooth functioning of this facility.
