Diwali Illuminates UNESCO List: Global Nod to India's Cultural Heritage

New Delhi : In a significant triumph for Indian culture, the nation's premier festival, Diwali, has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The announcement, made on December 10th, came during the international committee meeting held for the first time in India, in New Delhi, marking a moment of immense national pride.

This inclusion is expected to play a crucial role in preserving Indian traditions and enhancing their significance worldwide. With this addition, India's count of cultural heritage elements on the prestigious list rises to 15, joining renowned traditions like the Kumbh Mela, Durga Puja, Garba of Gujarat, Yoga, Ramlila, and the tradition of Vedic chanting.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar promptly shared their elation over UNESCO's decision.

PM Modi, writing on 'X', expressed that people across India and the world are thrilled. He underscored the profound connection of Diwali to India's culture and ethos, calling it the "soul of our civilization" and a symbol of light and righteousness. He believes this global recognition will substantially increase the festival's popularity internationally.

Dr. Jaishankar also took to X, stating his happiness and recognizing the decision as a validation of the festival's "immense cultural, religious and spiritual significance and its role in bringing people together."

The decision was finalized during the UNESCO meeting scheduled from December 8th to 13th at the Red Fort complex. India successfully argued that Diwali is not merely a festival but is celebrated as a symbol of the victory of good over evil, peace, and prosperity. The meeting involved over 700 representatives from 150 countries, reviewing 67 nominations from 78 nations.

To celebrate the historic milestone, the night of December 10th saw Delhi come alive with a Diwali-like atmosphere. According to Delhi’s Culture Minister, Kapil Mishra, all major historical and government buildings were adorned with earthen lamps and decorative lights. The main celebration was held at the Red Fort, with the surrounding Chandni Chowk area lit up with rangoli, lights, and fireworks.
