Confirming the return of the fishermen, the Indian Embassy wrote 'Homecoming' on the 'X'. Six Indian fishermen were brought back to Chennai from Sri Lanka this morning.
The Sri Lankan Navy had detained these fishermen from Tamil Nadu on January 23 for crossing the maritime zone. The fishermen, who reached Chennai airport on Tuesday morning, expressed gratitude to the Indian Embassy in Colombo for their safe return and thanked both the Indian and Sri Lankan governments for facilitating their release.
Hundreds of fishermen from Tamil Nadu fish in the Palk Strait, a narrow stretch of water separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka, during which Indian fishermen are sometimes arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy, accusing them of entering their territory. However, in such a situation, the Indian High Commission provides them consular assistance and plays an important role in the process of their early return home.
