Lucknow. In a significant move towards environmental preservation, HDFC Bank has launched a comprehensive awareness campaign against plastic usage as part of its CSR initiative, Parivartan, ahead of World Environment Day. The campaign, active across India, focuses on building consciousness among customers, employees, and communities about the impact of plastic waste and promoting sustainable alternatives.

Under this impactful initiative, HDFC Bank aims to instill environmentally responsible habits through both digital and on-ground engagement strategies. The campaign extends beyond awareness, incorporating tangible actions such as recycling drives, employee-led clean-up missions, and community engagement programs.

A Ground-Level Push for Change
The Parivartan-led campaign invites customers at select branches to deposit plastic e-waste for safe recycling, while also providing education on sustainable choices. Additionally, awareness sessions and clean-up drives—many spearheaded by HDFC Bank employees—are being conducted to inspire collaborative action at the grassroots level.

A dedicated online platform has been rolled out, allowing users to take an eco-conscious pledge and learn about the harmful effects of plastic pollution. This educational portal is designed to empower citizens with actionable insights on reducing their plastic footprint.

Vision 2025: Cleaner Villages, Greener Cities
More than just a campaign, this initiative is part of a broader waste management mission under Parivartan. HDFC Bank has set an ambitious target to implement solid waste management systems in over 1,000 villages and establish 15 material recovery facilities in urban local bodies by 2025.

These community-driven systems aim to improve waste segregation, enhance recycling processes, and reduce landfill dependency. The program is aligned with national and global sustainability goals, including the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

National Reach, Local Impact
Across states such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Assam, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh, the Bank is activating a wide range of local interventions. These include:

Educational workshops on plastic waste reduction

Community art installations using recycled materials

Behavior change campaigns promoting long-term ecological responsibility

One standout initiative in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, featured a 26-foot mural made from plastic bottle caps, created in collaboration with Waste Warriors. In Bir and Dharamshala, a targeted campaign diverted over 200 metric tonnes of dry waste from landfills in FY 2024-25, exemplifying impactful local leadership.

In Visakhapatnam, HDFC Bank’s partnership with local gram panchayats led to the training of self-help groups and sanitation workers—turning waste management into a livelihood-enhancing opportunity. Similar programs in Chhattisgarh, Assam, and Kerala have helped process thousands of tonnes of dry waste, integrating informal waste workers and promoting inclusive green growth.

A Collaborative Effort for a Plastic-Free Future
Speaking on the campaign, Kaizad Bharucha, Deputy Managing Director, HDFC Bank, stated:
"At HDFC Bank, we believe that meaningful change is co-created with communities. Our Parivartan initiatives, including this plastic awareness campaign, support local ownership and create lasting impact. Together, we’re helping protect the environment while strengthening the social and economic fabric of our communities.”

As India gears up to celebrate World Environment Day, HDFC Bank’s Parivartan is demonstrating how corporate responsibility and citizen action can come together to fight plastic pollution—turning awareness into action and building a more sustainable future for generations to come.
