Former newsreader Amruta Rao wins the Best Marathi Film National Award for her production of "Shyamchi Aai."

Mumbai. Amruta Rao, a familiar face to millions of Indians as a newsreader from 1979 to 2004, has now achieved a remarkable victory in the world of cinema. Her passion project, Shyamchi Aai, has been honored with the Best Marathi Feature Film at the 2023 National Film Awards, marking a new chapter in her illustrious career.
With a strong academic background in both science and law, Amruta transitioned from the black-and-white era of television to become a respected producer. Her journey with "Shyamchi Aai," based on the autobiographical novel by freedom fighter Sane Guruji, was driven by a deep personal conviction.

"I had no doubt this film would receive a National Award," says Amruta, reflecting on her unwavering commitment to the project. "I gave it everything—emotionally, physically, creatively. Every decision, every detail, every shot had to reflect the dignity of Sane Guruji’s words."
To capture the authenticity of the early 20th-century Konkan region, Amruta went to extraordinary lengths. She meticulously scouted and restored a 200-year-old heritage home, ensuring every element, from vintage props to costumes, was true to the era. Her dedication extended to the actors, who shaved their heads to maintain the historical accuracy of their characters.
Beyond her award-winning production, Amruta continues to be an influential figure in the Marathi film industry, having nurtured films like "Phulrani," "Haa Mee Maratha," and "Manini." She now shares her journey and insights with audiences through her YouTube channel, where she offers a unique look into the world of cinema, life, and art.
