Anupam Kher and Tusshar Kapoor Launch Dr. Raj Bothra’s Memoir “USA v Raj”

In a poignant unveiling ceremony, renowned actors Anupam Kher and Tusshar Kapoor launched Padma Shri Dr. Raj Bothra’s memoir titled “USA v Raj” at JW Marriott, Mumbai. This event marks a significant return for Dr. Bothra, whose life took a tumultuous turn in December 2018 when he faced wrongful imprisonment in the United States. The memoir chronicles his journey from a celebrated medical professional and philanthropist to a victim of a flawed judicial system.

Dr. Raj Bothra, an 81-year-old surgeon and interventional pain expert, has dedicated decades to healing and philanthropy, working extensively in both the U.S. and India. His contributions to society earned him the prestigious Padma Shri award during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s administration, presented by then-President K. R. Narayanan. In addition to his medical achievements, Dr. Bothra has played a vital role in establishing the Nargis Dutt Foundation and has worked with organizations such as the Mother Teresa Foundation, raising awareness on critical health issues like nicotine use, AIDS, and alcohol abuse.

Despite his remarkable career, Dr. Bothra's life was shattered when he was arrested by the FBI on false charges. He spent 1,301 days in wrongful imprisonment, separated from his family and stripped of his dignity until he was acquitted by a jury in June 2022. His story serves as a powerful narrative of resilience and the quest for justice.

The book launch was attended by Dr. Bothra’s family, including his wife Pammi and daughter Sonia, alongside acclaimed filmmaker Ravi K. Chandran, who will direct the film adaptation of the memoir. The event also featured actors Emily Shah and Ankur Bhatia, both of whom will portray significant roles in the upcoming film. Veteran actor Kabir Bedi was announced to play the role of Dr. Bothra, promising to bring depth to the character.

In his remarks, Anupam Kher emphasized the extraordinary character of Dr. Bothra, stating, “He has done a lot for society, and calling him an ordinary man is simply not true. His story is one of courage and resilience, and I urge everyone to read his book ‘USA v Raj.’” Kher expressed his shock at the injustice faced by Dr. Bothra, highlighting the need for awareness regarding such issues in developed nations.

Tusshar Kapoor echoed Kher’s sentiments, stating, “Dr. Bothra’s journey is a testament to the human spirit. His life proves that tough times don’t last, but tough people do. I hope his story inspires many.”

Dr. Bothra himself shared his motivations for writing the memoir, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about the judicial system’s flaws. “If I had no idea of a cruel judicial system, I am sure most common people in America are not aware either. Next could be anybody,” he warned. His reflections aim not only to spotlight legal reform but also to foster a cultural shift towards justice and humanity.
