Civil Lines Traffic Woes: Trade Bodies Demand One-Way Service Lane and Encroachment Crackdown

Prayagraj : The persistent traffic congestion and illegal encroachments in the upscale Civil Lines area have prompted local business leaders to seek immediate police intervention. A high-level delegation from the Jila Mahila Vyapaar Mandal, accompanied by prominent trade representatives, submitted a formal memorandum to Police Commissioner Joginder Singh on Tuesday.

The delegation, led by Trade Board President Rana Chawla and District Women’s Trade Board President Avantika Tandon, highlighted the alarming rise of permanent encroachments. Major arteries including MG Marg, Elgin Road, SP Marg, and Nawab Yusuf Road have been significantly narrowed by unauthorized car and scooter workshops.

Traders pointed out that vehicles parked for repairs and temporary mechanical stalls have choked the streets, making it nearly impossible for customers to access local shops. "These workshops have turned public roads into private garages, severely impacting the commercial vibrancy of Civil Lines," the memorandum stated.

To streamline movement, the trade bodies proposed a strategic change for the MG Marg service lane. They requested the authorities to declare it strictly one-way to prevent vehicles from Subhash Square entering in the opposite direction, which frequently leads to gridlock. Additionally, the delegation urged for the immediate repair of non-functional traffic signals under the Smart City project at several key intersections.

Police Commissioner Joginder Singh provided a positive response to the concerns, promising a personal inspection of the affected zones. He assured the traders that a systematic plan would be implemented to clear encroachments and optimize traffic flow.

The assurance has been welcomed by the business community, including Hotel Association President Sardar Harjinder Singh and General Secretary Pallavi Arora, who view this as a vital step toward restoring the commercial order of Prayagraj's heartland.
