India will not compromise under any pressure : S Jaishankar

New Delhi : National interest has always been and will continue to be the core principle of India's foreign policy. India will not compromise its interests under any external pressure or international equations. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar made this remark during his inaugural address at the Aravalli Summit held at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

The conference, organized to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the School of International Studies (SIS) at JNU, was organized in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Chintan Research Foundation.

Responding to a student's question during the conference, the External Affairs Minister said that India has always taken decisions in national interest. Even in the past, during the era of India-Soviet relations, our policies were formulated with this perspective. At that time, we were surrounded by the US-Pakistan-China triangle. In such a situation, it was not possible to remain neutral, and we had to do what was in our interest. India's foreign policy has been determined by time and circumstances. Principles are important, but national interest is paramount in the final decision.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Jaishankar spoke openly on India's global role in the conference organized on the topic 'India and the World Order - Preparing for 2047'. Apart from this, while talking about India's independent foreign policy, he said that if we do not adopt strategic autonomy today, then with which country would you like to entrust your future?

The Foreign Minister said that when the world is becoming unstable, then the need for multi-relationships and strategic autonomy increases even more. On the other hand, while addressing the Trust and Safety India Festival 2025 held here, Jaishankar said that India has a 'special responsibility', because many countries of the Global South see India as a source of inspiration. Speaking at this pre-summit event organised as part of preparations for the AI Impact Summit to be held in February 2026, the External Affairs Minister said that for a society like India, 'responsible AI' means developing indigenous tools and frameworks, creating self-assessment protocols for innovators and creating relevant guidelines - so that the development, use and operation of AI is safe and accessible to all.
