Kannauj. Svayam, India’s first accessibility organization, successfully launched the first initiative of collaboration with the National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation (promoted NHFDC) FOUNDATION for the implementation of the Accessible Family Toilet (AFT) project. As part of this initiative, a Technical Training and Awareness Program on August 4, 2023, at NHFDC's Swalamban Kendra (NSK) in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, is being organized. 

The event aimed at providing essential technical training to approximately 20 plumbers who will be instrumental in implementing the AFT specifications in the region. By equipping these skilled individuals with the necessary knowledge and expertise, Svayam and NHFDC FOUNDATIONaim to ensure accessible and inclusive toilet facilities for all. The plumbers will learn about the specialized requirements and techniques involved in installing Accessible Family Toilets, enabling them to make a significant impact on the ground.

In addition to the technical training, the event also included an awareness program. Over 300+ members from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) & weaker sections shall actively participate in this program, playing a vital role in spreading awareness about the benefits of AFT among the local villagers. Their further involvement will help generate interest and promote the adoption of accessible fitments in the community.

Along with the team members of Svayam, NHFDCFOUNDATION, Shri Naveen Shah, IFS, Chairman –cum-Managing Director of National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation, along with others, was present at the event.

MsSminu Jindal, Founder - Chairperson of Svayam and MD Jindal SAW Ltd., expressed that this training program holds immense significance for several reasons as it enhances the skills of the participating plumbers, enabling them to contribute effectively to the successful implementation of the Accessible Family Toilet Project. Moreover, the awareness program will educate the villagers about the advantages of AFT, fostering increased adoption and utilization of these accessible toilet fitments.

Shri Naveen Shah, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, NHFDC, said a survey of the area will be done by Saksham NGO to provide the benefit of retrofitting accessible toilets to Divyangjan. After the survey, a campaign will be launched to make accessible toilets in the homes of all the people with disability.

The training was conducted in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, where the NHFDC foundation already has a skilled pool of plumbers. Following the successful implementation of the project in this region, Svayam, and NHFDC FOUNDATION plan to expand the initiative to other Swalamban Kendra locations across 17 centers in 7 states in India.

Also, on this occasion, NHFDC Foundation organized a free Medical Camp for the weaker section with free tests & medicines besides consultation with specialized doctors (Cardiologist, Gynaecologist, Eye-Specialist, etc.) with the support of Banyan Roof Foundation, Noida.
