Double Safety: Helmets Now Compulsory for Pillion Riders in Kanpur

Kanpur : Following a decisive mandate from the Supreme Court, road safety protocols in Kanpur have become significantly more stringent. It is now mandatory for both the driver and the pillion rider on a two-wheeler to wear helmets. While this move may require citizens to spend more on safety gear, it aims to provide crucial protection during accidents.

ARTO Administration, Alok Kumar Singh, highlighted that the Supreme Court expressed deep concern over rising road fatalities in its October 2025 order. Data from the 'Road Accidents in India 2023' report reveals that nearly 45% of road mishaps involved two-wheelers. Tragically, 70% of these deaths were attributed to the absence of helmets.

Under these revised standards, new vehicle buyers will now have to purchase two helmets instead of one at the time of delivery. Although previously existing as a guideline, the rule was seldom followed by pillion riders in Uttar Pradesh. With the apex court’s intervention, the state is now aligning with other regions to enforce the "double helmet" rule strictly. Officials have warned that negligence will no longer be overlooked, as the priority is to save lives on the busy streets of Kanpur.
