Delay in accurate diagnosis of lung cancer is a major cause of death: Dr. Surya Kant
Shubham Kashyap Lucknow. A workshop was organized at IMA Bhawan, Lucknow to share important information related to lung cancer and brainstorm on early detection of the disease and better treatment.
The workshop was organized under the aegis of the Indian Society for Study of Lung Cancer (ISSLC) in collaboration with the Department of Respiratory Medicine, KGMU, Lucknow Chest Club, and Indian Chest Society UP Chapter. In the workshop, there was a gathering of renowned pulmonologists along with oncologists, researchers, and health care providers. The objective of the workshop was to discuss and brainstorm new research on preparedness for the latest diagnosis, treatment, and management of lung cancer.
On this occasion, Dr. Surya Kant, Chairman of the Department of Respiratory Medicine, KGMU, said that the symptoms of lung cancer and TB are often similar. Disorders occurring in the respiratory tract due to smoking are misdiagnosed as a symptom of pulmonary TB. Due to these similar symptoms, delay in identifying a patient with lung cancer becomes a major cause of death. That is why it is said that just as “everything that glitters is not gold, similarly not every spot on a chest X-ray is TB.” Dr. Surya Kant said that lung cancer accounts for 6% of all cancers and 8% of cancer-related deaths in India. Globally, about 20 lakh new lung cancer patients are diagnosed every year, including 18 lakh die every year.
In the workshop, Padmashree Dr. D. Behera, President, the Indian Society for Study of Lung Cancer (ISSLC), explained in detail the status of lung cancer in India. Along with this, he also threw light on the risks and factors related to it. He shared information about testing in lung cancer, different mutations in tumor types, and different types of chemotherapy. Dr. Deepti Mishra, from Kalyan Cancer Institute, spoke about updates in molecular biomarkers and the role of immunohistochemistry in the diagnosis of lung cancer. Dr. Shiv Rajan, Oncosurgeon, KGMU, threw light on the functional management of lung cancer at different stages. Dr. Jyoti Bajpai of the Respiratory Medicine Department, KGMU highlighted the role of targeted chemotherapy in lung cancer.
Experts present in the CME included Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Dr. KB Gupta, Dr. Suresh Kumar, and Dr. Shailendra Yadav. Apart from this, Dr. Hemant Kumar from Dr. RML Institute, Lucknow, Dr. Anand Gupta from Balrampur District Hospital, Dr. Sushil Chaturvedi, Dr. DK Verma, Dr. Asthana and Dr. RS Kushwaha, Dr. Santosh Kumar from Respiratory Medicine Department KGMU. , Dr. Rajeev Garg, Dr. Darshan Bajaj, Dr. Anand Srivastava were present in the workshop.
