"Salaakar" Weaves Real-Life Espionage into a Gripping Tale
Producer Comall Sunjoy W discusses the making of "Salaakar," a spy series inspired by real events.

One of the series' most notable features is its use of two timelines to unravel a complex web of secrets. Comall admitted this was a major challenge for the production team. "Ensuring the narrative remains consistent across different timelines was definitely challenging for the writers," she said. Director Faruk Kabir, however, ensured that the pieces seamlessly fit together, allowing viewers to easily follow the story's progression.
Yet, the greater challenge, she noted, was maintaining the emotional core of the characters. "We had to keep the emotional journey consistent across different eras so the audience could stay connected to the characters and their stories, no matter the time period," she explained. This focus on emotional authenticity is a key element that sets "Salaakar" apart from other thrillers.
The series centers on Adhir, an Indian spy portrayed by Naveen Kasturia, tasked with a covert mission to infiltrate enemy territory and uncover a threat to national security. When casting the lead, Comall and her team sought an actor who could embody a simple yet impactful presence.
"Adhir's character is inspired by an Indian spy hero known for his crucial role in cross-border operations," Comall shared. "We wanted someone who looked believable with an understated presence. His simplicity stood out for that character." She emphasized that a spy's primary objective is to blend in and operate without being noticed. "The focus wasn't on a sophisticated, charming guy, but rather on someone with a calm demeanor. Beneath that ordinary persona, he is fearless, willing to take risks, and possesses sharp analytical skills."
The series also features Mouni Roy in a critical role, whose character creates an interesting contrast by showing both vulnerability and strength under pressure. "Her arc drives the story to the climax, building tension that keeps viewers completely engaged," Comall added.
To ensure the series felt authentic, the team conducted extensive research. "Since the story is inspired by a real event, the team and the director delved into the details of espionage, even getting inputs from former spies," Comall revealed. Their goal was to portray the "human experiences, emotions, and moral challenges" faced by these individuals.
Direction, cinematography, production design, and costumes were also meticulously planned to maintain a realistic vibe, with the director opting for a subtle visual palette to effectively highlight the story’s tension and intrigue. With its blend of real-life inspiration and expert storytelling, "Salaakar" promises to be more than just a spy thriller—it’s a deep dive into the human side of espionage.
